More about Mobile Users – SA’s Stats and Figures
Mobile phone advertising is one of the most powerful tools that can be used in business today, so it makes sense that most businesses are now tapping into various ways of doing this. New platforms are created, designs are getting more mobile-friendly, and new apps that employ push and geo-targeting are successfully employed around the globe.
In South Africa, the picture is no different. When it comes to mobile users, stats and figures indicate that the power of mobile phone advertising can be harnessed just as prolifically here in SA as in some of the most mobile rich countries in the world, because we have one of the largest telecommunication markets on the entire continent. Cellphones are now using more internet access than ever and recent reports indicate that more than 60% of people in South Africa regularly use cellphones to surf the net.
Mobile communications have also become more enticing with cheap communication platforms (Mxit, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.) and millions of users in this county log onto these platforms every day – these applications have caused a great increase in mobile internet users. Other social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are also taken a lot of mobile market share.
In order to understand the increase of mobile users in this country, it’s essential to look at the demographics. One report indicates that more than three quarters of those living in low income groups aged fifteen and older now own and use mobile phones, which is significantly more than other African countries. Cellphones have significantly reduced the use of landlines too, and it’s not uncommon for households to have no landline connections any longer. The conclusion to draw from all of these figures is that the key driver for the adoption of mobile internet is now the variety of social media platforms.
Stats and figures indicate that there are around 52 million people living in this country and a total of 66 million activated mobile connections. This means that the active mobile connections and penetration amounts to 128% of the population. Around 11 million smartphones can be found in SA and around 40% of mobile connections use data. The average revenue per user per month in SA amounts to around R120 and more than 80% of this revenue is generated by the prescribed subscriber base.
The sheer number of mobile phones users in this country proves that there is a huge market for target driven mobile advertising on a variety of social media (and other) platforms, and a wide array of applications being developed on a constant basis to drive and develop this market. This leaves businesses with a huge pool of users to tap into for marketing purposes.
If your business has not yet tapped into the mobile market, you’re losing out on business. So the question is: what are you waiting for?
